I was figuring out what to write this week and stumbled upon a quote by Henri Cartier-Bresson. He’s a master of candid photography and one of the pioneers of Street Photography. After our last Black & White Street Photography competition, I thought it was fitting to mention him. Plus, it ties in perfectly with my theme and this week’s short update – practice, practice practice…

So, last Saturday, I was heading out to meet Marie for some practice when I tuned into Kerry Radio’s “In Focus with Dominick Walsh.” To my surprise, I heard two familiar names! Both Noel and Michael had sent in images for Photograph of the Month. Along with other photos (including the two I’ve posted here), they both submitted a shot of Molly’s Cottage, and Noel even mentioned our Club’s Black Valley Outing! Killarney Camera Club couldn’t have asked for better publicity! When I got home, I checked the website to see all the photos – you can check them out on the link below:

So, as I was saying, Marie and I headed out on Saturday morning for a couple of hours of practice. We decided to explore the grounds around Muckross Abbey. Luckily, I found the little bridge over the river that I had discovered on a previous outing, so we set up our tripods while a friendly swan seemed to enjoy posing for photos. Overall, I think we had a successful practice session – we must have taken around 200 photos between us! And as you can see, Marie took my advice about getting down low to capture shots from unusual angles!

So how has your practice been going??? I did say that it was going to be a short update …

So what’s up next?  Seamus is going to lead an outing this Sunday, 9th February, to Torc Waterfall and Derrycunnihy Waterfalls – the plan is to leave the usual meeting point at 9am.

We are still looking at dates for the two following outings that are planned. As soon as we’ve finalised things we’ll let you know.

  • March – Fota Wildlife Park
  • April – Rossbeigh Beach

Any other ideas, please forward them to myself or Mary and we will try to sort some more outings out.

Just to keep you reminded, this year our annual exhibition will be in Killarney House and Gardens for 2 months so to celebrate this, our theme will be Killarney National Park – please bear this in mind when you are out and about taking your images. For those that are unsure of what is covered by the national park check out https://www.nationalparks.ie/killarney/.

I’ll see you next time and if you have any photos from your week that you want to add to these updates and reports please do send them to me, cheers for now! Next in person Club meeting is in the new year on Thursday, 30th January at 7.30pm which will be competition night – Street Photography (Black & White).

Please note all our outings are for members only. If you’d like to join our club please contact our club secretary on secretary@killarneycameraclub.ie
